clean and restore dirty, sticky NARS packaging

dirty sticky nars packaging case

The chic NARS matted packaging is love at first, but in time, it becomes less desirable… With all the busyness of makeup applications, comes fingerprints, powders, and other debris that sticks onto these packagings. And cleaning them is not as easy as a simple wipe. As stickiness eventually takes over the once smooth matted makeup cases (especially in humid summer climate) to attract even more debris, the initial adoration of the famed matted packaging becomes an affliction to a #NARSissist. This problem isn’t exclusive to NARS packaging; same goes for any matted or rubberized packagings of whatever makeup products.

Due to countless trial and error (using isopropyl alcohol, makeup wipes, eye makeup remover, household cleaners, etc…) to restore these ill-fated, once chic packagings, some of my NARS casings have turned beyond restore (makeup wipes-big mistake!), and no longer matted but shiny with some of the NARS print erased (isopropyl alcohol). One day, I decided to google how to clean sticky NARS packaging. Why, for so many years, I didn’t bother to search this online, I don’t know… I came across some of the methods I’ve already tried as well as something new: using silica powder! A lovely blogpost (HERE) gave me the courage to try silica powder for my NARS restoration mission. And after couple of tries with silica powder, I’m finally settled with a method I’m the most pleased with.

Stuff needed: multi-purpose household cleaner (with cleaning cloth or paper towel) or wipes, silica powder (your basic MUFE HD finishing powder like product that has silica), a makeup brush (preferably a fan brush).

The multi-purpose household cleaner is to get the really obvious debris off the packaging. I use Method All-Purpose Naturally Derived Surface Cleaner – it’s best to use a safe, non-toxic cleaner like this one rather strong chemical cleaners like Lysol. Use it sprayed on paper towel, and wipe away. Don’t wipe too aggressively, just make sure to get most of the unwanted debris off. And now on to the fun part…

I’m using Banila Co. Prime Primer Finish Powder. This one is a cheapie version of MUFE HD Powder.

And a fan brush I got from Costal Scents ages ago… It’s too rough for the face, so I finally found use for it!

Grabs some unsightly NARS products; these ones here have already been wiped with a cleaner and ready for some powdering.

And onto the sticky NARS case, and brush away…

Keep brushing away, until powder is blended evenly and no longer visible.

And voilà!

I’m pretty happy with the results. Stickiness is completely gone, with the matted finish still intact. The most satisfying out of all the other methods I’ve tried over the years!
